James W. Royall, farmer, was born in Jackson County, Tenn., October 3, 1834, and came to Franklin County with his parents in 1851. His father was born in West Tennessee in 1808, and on attaining his majority married Lavina, daughter of William McGlasson, a farmer. Of six sons and two daughters, our subject is the oldest. The father, a farmer, settled on the east side of Six Mile Prairie, where he died in 1872. The mother, born in Tennessee in 1814, died in 1863 at the old home. Our subject was reared on the farm, and received a common-school education. In August, 1862, he enlisted in the Federal Army, and was honorably discharged in the spring of 1863. September 18, 1855,

he married Mary, daughter of Michael Sinder, a farmer, native of Union County, Ill. Their children are James W., Julia A., Alexander M. and Mary A. His wife was born in Williamson County August 16, 1832. Our subject is a Democrat, and first voted for Buchanan. His farm of 182 acres, well improved, and� with a good residence and a fine new barn, is situated sixteen miles southwest of Benton.
