LIBERTY RIDLEN CEMETERY

The Liberty Baptist Church is located in section 21 of Northern Township in Franklin County Illinois. The Liberty Ridlen cemetery is located next to the church. The land was donated by Samuel Ridlen. Samuel purchased 40 acres @ $1.25 cents an acre at a cost of $50 in section 21 of the NWSW of T5S R4E, Northern Township in Franklin County on April 12, 1854. It must be from this land that the church and cemetery is located on.

Samuel Ridlen served in the 4th Ohio Regt. as a Sergeant under Captain S. B. Kyler and Col. Findley in the War of 1812. He enlisted from Cincinnati, Ohio and served from 25 April 1812 to 24 April 1815. For this he was granted bounty warrants for 160 acres in Douglas County, [mistake, should say Franklin County,] in the area known as "Egypt", in southern Illinois. This land was in "Webbs Prairie".

Samuel's name is not even listed in the Roll of Honor, or the Honor Roll as a veteran buried in "Ridlen" after donating the land.

Samuel Ridlen /Redlon was born 10 June 1792 in Phillipsburgh Twp, Mass., now Hollis, Maine. He was the son of Abraham and Patience (Tibbetts) Ridlen. In 1800 Abraham moved with his family to Cincinnati, Ohio. This is where Samuel married his wife Sarah Davis on 18 July 1813. To this union nine children were born: Lucinda b. 1814 Oh; Patience b. 1816, d.y.; Elizabeth md Brooks Ross; Prudence b. 1818 md Howell Mulford; Nancy b. 1818 Oh d.y.; Jane b. 31 Dec 1820, md. 1st a Duncan, and md. 2nd. Margaret Beard and settled first at Memphis, Tn, then moved to Webbs Prairie where he d. 5 June 1876.

Samuel died in 1878 at the age of 86. His wife Sarah (Davis) Ridlen died in 1857. They are buried in the Liberty Ridlen cemetery.

This web page consists of documentation researched mostly by JoAnn McGhee, and some by Sheldon Jones, and some by the web master. The pictures were taken by Sheldon Jones with a few from Lynne Westra.

Your web master is Susan Dorris and I researched the ancestry of the Ridlen family. More about them later.
